Mission Statement
Gays Against Guns NY is an inclusive, direct-action group of LGBTQ+ people and their allies committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry's chain of death: investors, manufacturers, the NRA, and politicians who block safer gun laws.
We are New York-based but work with GAG chapters in other cities to ensure safety for all individuals, particularly vulnerable communities such as people of color, women, people who struggle with mental health issues, LGBTQ+ people, and religious minorities. GAG condemns white supremacy, all instances of excessive force by police, and police militarization.
Direct Action Saves Lives
From nightclubs to classrooms, no one is safe until we're all safe. Gays Against Guns is leading the charge for common-sense gun laws, bringing queer creativity and passion to the frontlines of activism. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a more inclusive, protected society.
Why are Guns a gay issue?
The LGBTQ+ community faces disproportionate risks from gun violence, making it a critical issue for queer individuals. Higher rates of hate crimes, intimate partner violence, and suicide involving firearms directly impact our community's safety and well-being. Moreover, the intersectionality of LGBTQ+ identity with other marginalized groups compounds these risks, particularly for queer people of color and transgender individuals. By addressing gun violence, we're not just fighting for our right to live safely—we're advocating for our right to exist openly and proudly in all spaces.
What does GAG Do?
Gays Against Guns (GAG) is an inclusive direct action group that fights gun violence through nonviolent means. We:
Advocate for stricter Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) laws, including bans on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons.
Organize demonstrations and use creative protest tactics to raise awareness.
Honor the human beings who have lost their lives to gun violence
“Name, blame, and shame” gun industry stakeholders: manufacturers, investors, lobbyists, and politicians who block strong gun violence prevention legislation.
Educate the public on the intersection of LGBTQ+ rights and gun violence prevention.
Advocate for a universal federal background check system that would close the many loopholes that allow perpetrators of violence to buy guns.
By bringing a unique LGBTQ+ perspective to the gun violence prevention movement, GAG works to create a safer, more inclusive society for all.
